A violent holiday weekend in Chicago left forty people injured and seven dead, including a seven year-old boy.
Chicago Police are investigating the shootings of 47 people since Friday.
Seven year-old Amari Brown was one victim of these shootings. Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said the boy was not the intended victim, and the bullet was meant for the boy’s father, a known gang member.
The Chicago Police department increased their number of officers on the streets for the holiday weekend by 30% in an effort to combat this violence. Since Friday morning, police have recovered one illegal gun per hour across the city.
McCarthy told reporters “We need some help here, folks. We have to fix this broken system.”
