A surface exploration drilling program has yielded a new discovery for Kirkland Lake Gold.
The company reported Feb. 25 of a new high-grade zone near its Macassa Gold Mine in northeastern Ontario.
The new Zone 3 came about through a drilling campaign designed to follow up on earlier work which produced some near-surface mineralization. The area of discovery is at the Amalgamated Break which has seen limited exploration in the past.
Drill results yielded grades of 1 718.06 grams per tonne (g/t) of gold over 0.4 metres, 283.29 g/t of gold over 0.3 metres, and 40.46 g/t of gold over 2.2 metres.
"We are very pleased with the results to date of this surface exploration program,”said company CEO George Ogilvie in a statement, “and are excited to shortly be able to announce a reserve and resource calculation on ounces close to surface for the first time in the company's history.
“Intersections from the surface campaign to date have shown mineralization from surface to 1000-foot depth, which have the potential to be mined from a ramp or decline. The surface program will continue throughout the year as exploration continues both east and west from this area.”
