The non-wearable gadget can be placed by the side of a user's bed and will measure quality of sleep using a non-contact radio frequency sensor.

"Inside the QOL Sensor is a non-contact radio frequency sensor, which measures such things as the movements of your body, breathing and heartbeat, all without physically touching your body," Iwata explained.

Information will be analysed over the cloud and recommendations will be sent to users to help improve sleeping patterns.

The product is being manufactured by medical equipment company ResMed, and is based on research carried out by fatigue experts Dr Yasuyoshi Watanabe, Dr Hirohiko Kuratsune and Dr Seiki Tajima.

Nintendo posted operating profits of 215 million yen (£1.2m) for the most recent financial quarter.

The gaming giant reported an operating loss of 18 billion yen a year ago, and was forecast to record a 3.7 billion-yen loss this time around.
