CANTON, N.Y. – Marathon native and University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh senior Melanie Brickner wrapped up a stellar weekend in the NCAA Division III track meet with a third-place finish in the shot put.

Brickner's throw of 46 feet-11.75 inches came on her fifth attempt. Her teammate, Jecel Klotz, finished second in the event.

Brickner won the national championship in the hammer throw Thursday with a toss of 192-7 inches that she got on her fourth attempt in the event.

Brickner finished fourth in the event last year and was the top seed this weekend.

Rausch wins DII discus title

ALLENDALE, Mi. – Alissa Rausch, a Wausau West graduate and Winona State senior, won the title in the womens discus during the NCAA Division II outdoor meet in Grand Valley State Friday.

Rausch's winning throw of 55.22 meters came on her fourth attempt of the event.

Rausch also competed in the shot put Saturday but did not place in the event. She was 11th in the hammer throw Thursday.

BASKETBALL

West boys receive academic honor

WAUSAU – The Wausau West boys basketball team was recently received first team academic all-state honors from the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association.

The Warriors had a team GPA of 3.66.

West senior Taylor Penn received academic all-state honors individually as well.

Penn is a class valedictorian at West.

VOLLEYBALL

Mosinee 8th-grade squad wins title

MOSINEE – The Mosinee eighth-grade travel volleyball team recently won the Wisconsin Independent Volleyball League tournament title.

A total of 48 teams participated in the tournament to cap the WIVL season. Stratford was third and Antigo was seventh.

Merrill took fourth in the seventh grade competition.
