VANCOUVER -- NDP leader Tom Mulcair says his party will introduce a motion in Parliament this week demanding the Conservative government reopen the Kitsilano Coast Guard station in Vancouver.

Mulcair says the recent toxic bunker fuel spill in English Bay is a "wake-up call" and Conservative cuts are threatening British Columbia's coast.

He says the motion, to be introduced by New Democrat MP Fin Donnelly, will also demand a recently closed marine traffic centre in Ucluelet be reopened.

It will also call for a stop to planned closures of similar centres in Vancouver and Comox.

The federal government closed the Kitsilano location in 2013 as a cost-cutting measure.

The MV Marathassa dumped at least 2,700 litres of bunker fuel into English Bay last Wednesday and it took more than 12 hours for the Coast Guard to secure an oil-absorbing boom around the vessel.

The Department of Fisheries did not immediately respond to a request for comment but has previously said the Kitsilano station was a search-and-rescue location and would not have had the necessary equipment to respond to the spill
