An armed gang threatened to shoot a security guard in a terrifying raid on a Supervalu supermarket in Donabate, last Saturday evening.

At 4.45pm on Saturday, February 21, gardai from Swords responded to an armed robbery in progress at the Supvervalu supermarket in Donabate.

By the time gardaí arrived, the thieves had fled the scene. Earlier, two males entered the supermarket armed with a black handgun and a car jack.

The man with the gun threatened a security guard before the gang targeted the newsagent section of the store where they demanded the till trays from two tills.

The man with the handgun was wearing a navy tracksuit bottoms and a blue jacket and had a scarf covering his face while the second man, armed with the car jack, wore a grey tracksuit bottom and a blue jacket and also had a scarf covering his face.

Because their faces were obscured, witnesses found it difficult to give an accurate age for the two men but they are believed to be in their early 20s.

Having grabbed the two till trays, the armed gang made their escape from the scene in a silver Volvo.

The Volvo was recovered by gardaí in Hand's Caravan Park, some time later. A short distance from the car, gardaí also recovered the now empty till trays. All of that evidence is being technically examined.

It is understood the armed raiders got away with about €2,000 in cash. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

The incident came just four days after an attempted armed robbery at the nearby post office in Donabate.

The two incidents allied with a number of other armed robberies on the peninsula in recent weeks and months, will add to local concerns about the need for greater policing on the Donabate and Portrane peninsula. Gardaí in Swords are investigating.
