The new $15-million cable ferry that will ply the waters between Buckley Bay and Denman Island off Vancouver Island’s east coast is complete and will be towed next month to its route and ready for service in the fall. It is expected to be the world’s longest cable ferry service at 1,900 metres.

The three cables needed for the system will be installed this month and tested before the new ferry arrives. One cable will drive the ferry and the other two will guide it.

Sea trials and tests will completed after the ferry and cable system are connected to ensure it meets operational and safety requirements.

Ferries crews will go through training in June and July.

It is the first cable ferry in B.C. Ferries’ fleet, although there are other smaller cable ferries in B.C. which fall under the Ministry of Transportation.

The ferry was built at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards.
