A Weis Markets in Allentown is hoping to be the latest grocery store to offer beer to customers.

The supermarket at 365 S. Cedar Crest Boulevard has applied for a restaurant liquor license transfer, according to a public hearing notice. The license would be transferred from LouAnn Restaurant Group LLC, 131 Howertown Road in Catasauqua, according to the notice.

Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board records show that the license, which is currently in safekeeping status, has been used by Richie’s Public House in Catasauqua.

Liquor licenses can be transferred within the county in which they are located, but municipal approval is required when they are transferred across township or city lines. A hearing on the transfer has been scheduled before Allentown City Council for June 17 at 6 p.m.

Grocery stores are permitted to sell beer in Pennsylvania at locations that have cafes with a restaurant liquor license. Weis also sells beer at its William Penn Highway location in Palmer Township and its Sullivan Trail store in Forks Township.

A Wegmans store 2.5 miles from Weis’s Cedar Crest location also sells beer.
