Annie Aldrete is putting up All-American-type numbers this spring for the nationally-ranked Tennessee softball team.

Last year’s NCAA Softball Freshman of the Year, Aldrete has hit a team-high 12 homers. She also leads the Vols in runs batted in (39) and walks (22).

Named a team captain this year, the catcher has scored 34 runs in 40 games. Of her 38 hits, 19 have been for extra bases.

Aldrete, a Santa Catalina graduate and The Herald’s Softball Player of the Year in 2013, has committed just two errors in 215 chances behind the plate.

Orozco wins eighth straight judo title

Defending Junior National Judo Champion Carli Orozco won her eighth straight judo title in her age and belt class at the USA Scholastic Judo National Championships in Irvine, Texas.

A member of the Salinas Judo Club, Orozco has not lost a tournament in nearly a year. The win propelled Orozco to No. 1 in the nation in her age and weight division.

Bronze for Shioya family

The Shioya family came home with three bronze medals at the National Scholastic Championships in Irving, Texas.

Members of the Bojuka Ryu School of Martial Arts in Marina, Abigail, Bailey and Brandon Shioya all won bronze medals against some of the elite competitors in the United States.

Ventimilia chasing milestones

Senior Stephen Ventimilia has reached base in 16 of his 20 starts this spring for the University of Hawaii baseball team.

Slowed by a knee injury earlier in the season that cost him 13 games, the four-year starting second baseman leads the team in steals with four. Ventimilia is also among the team leaders in runs scored (14) and walks (13).

A former seven-sport standout at Monterey, Ventimilia has 112 hits in four years at Hawaii, 44 runs batted in and 31 steals.

Scholis providing points for Cal

Jayla Scholis ran a leg on the winning 400 and 1,600 relay teams and finished second in the 100 for Cal in the 121st track and field Big Meet against Stanford.

The former Seaside High and Monterey Peninsula College sprinter ran 12.08 in the 100. She was also third in the 200 in 25.29. Last year Scholis was second in the Junior College state championships in the 100, capturing the Northern California title.

Honor for Grant

The National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum will honor Pacific Grove wrestling coach Bill Grant with the Lifetime Service Award on May 2 at Menlo College in Atherton.

The Hall of Fame Museum was established in 1976 to preserve the history of the sport of wrestling, paying tribute to coaches, officials and contributors.

Grant has spent over 30 years coaching wrestling, first at Monterey and now at Pacific Grove. He also helps promote a wrestling clinic for coaches each year.

Bill McClintock basketball camp

Monterey Peninsula College will host the annual Bill McClintock Front Court Basketball Camp for boys and girls ages 12-19 on May 16 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fee is $100 and includes a DVD with 50 moves.

Salinas youth hoops league

Registration for the Salinas Recreational Basketball League for ages 9-11 will run until April 23. Fee is $45 for Salinas residents, $52 for nonresidents. Registration forms can be picked up at the Salinas Recreation Center from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. The league starts June 17.

Monte Vista sports camps

Monte Vista Christian will host summer camps for football, swimming, cheerleading, soccer, basketball, baseball and volleyball beginning on June 15. Full-day fee is $300, half-day fee is $150. Go to mvcs.org/summercamps for details.
