6 in Arkansas win merit scholarships

Six Arkansas high school seniors are among more than 1,000 students nationally to win corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarships.

The Arkansas students, their schools, probable areas of study and the scholarship providers are:

• Thinh D. Le, Benton High, mathematics, National Merit PPG Industries Foundation Community Scholarship.

• Emery E. Parker, Conway High, design, National Merit Walgreen Co. Scholarship.

• Brock J. DeMark, Fayetteville High, undecided, National Merit Dow Chemical Co. Scholarship.

• Samuel J. Johnson, Fayetteville High, business management, National Merit GKN Scholarship.

• Noah B. Asher of Little Rock, home school, law, National Merit -- Dr. Joseph J. Jacobs Scholarship.

• Daniel B. Hubbard of Rogers, Haas Hall Academy charter school in Fayetteville, mathematics, National Merit Pepsico Inc. Scholarship.

Most of the awards are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study and provide annual stipends. Some awards are single payments of $2,500 to $5,000. The awards can be used at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university.

Additional winners of National Merit Scholarship awards will be named May 6, May 27 and July 13.
