Local Chatham artists debut cartoon collection

The creators of the online cartoon "Marshall's Law" have published a collection of 100 of their most popular online strips and new material - "Marshall's Law, Follow the Leader."

The new book is available from online retailers Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com and BookDepository.com.

Illustrator Tomoyo Pitcher and her writer husband Roger Pitcher debuted the comic strip about Marshall the dog and his hapless parents in 2011. It has been running continuously with new comics three times weekly.

Marshall's Law follows the life of Marshall, a big grey dog who runs his parents life. They love their boy and remain clueless that they are wrapped around his paw.

The idea for the strip grew out of the Pitcher's own experiences being owned by three dogs and their thoughtful observations of other people interacting with their own dogs. They served as volunteers at a Doggy Day Camp at their local animal shelter, St Hubert's Giralda in Madison.

"Every pet owner ends up being 'owned' themselves," according to artist Tomoyo Pitcher. "The most common reaction we get from people who follow Marshall online is 'you must have set up a camera in our house'".

"The strip has followers all over the world. These folks have been telling us how they want to be able to share with their dog-loving friends and family the gift of smiles and touching moments Marshall brings them," said writer and colorist Roger Pitcher. "The audience spoke, and this book is the result."

Marshall is loved all over the world. "People will leave comments in Spanish, Italian, French, Russian, Slovenian, Chinese...I'm sometimes blown away to see just how diverse the audience is for Marshall's Law," says Roger. "I have no idea what they are writing but there is always a 'smiley face' and some form of 'hahahaha' at the end of the comments."

Both Pitchers have prior careers in advertising.

Tomoyo is an honors graduate of Parson's School of Design and a licensed artist. Her artwork appears on thousands of decorative items for the home and garden available at national retailers like Christmas Tree Shoppes and Bed, Bath and Beyond. www.tomoyodogart.com
