A London city councillor’s pitch to make school zones safer for children walking to school took a big step forward, even after learning the sobering cost.

Too many cars still speed on Viscount Road, years after the city installed numerous traffic calming devices around two elementary schools.

Councillor Virginia Ridley is trying to get the speed limits lowered around all schools in London to 30 kilometres per hour, down from 40.

The Civic Works Committee has unanimously directed staff to develop a new policy on that, but the details need to still be worked out.

Councillor Maureen Cassidy says she doesn't like the idea of having different speed limits at different times of the day, saying it will lead to confusion.

Installing new speed limit signs with flashing lights could cost up to $15,000 per school in the city - adding up to about $1.75 million total.
