Mona K. Sutphen and Michael D. Wortley were appointed to the board of directors at Pioneer Natural Resources Co. (PXD), effective immediately, the company said July 1.
Their initial terms as independent directors expire at the annual stockholders’meeting in 2016.
Sutphen is a partner at Macro Advisory Partners LLP, and previously spent three years at UBS AG as managing director covering geopolitical risk and macro-policy trends.
From 2009 to 2011, she was White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy for President Obama, working on domestic and international policy and regulatory matters.
Prior to that, she was Stonebridge International’s managing director.
From 1991 to 2000, she served as a diplomat on the National Security Council staff, the U.S. Mission to the UN and also had postings in Asia and Europe.
Sutphen is on the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board. She is also on the boards Drilling Info Holdings LLC, the International Rescue Committee and Human Rights First. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a trustee of Mount Holyoke College and is on the Advisory Board of the Center for Global Energy Policy at Columbia University.
Sutphen has a bachelor’s degree from Mount Holyoke College and an MSc degree from the London School of Economics.
Wortley has practiced corporate law for more than 35 years handling corporate governance matters and M&A. He has had more than 25 years in management .
Previously, Wortley was a partner in the Dallas office of Vinson & Elkins LLP, and was COO and managing partner. He also worked for Johnson & Wortley PC.
Wortley has also served on for-profit public company boards and nonprofit boards of trustees. He is currently the chief legal officer for Reata Pharmaceuticals Inc.
He has a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from Southern Methodist University and a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dallas-based Pioneer Natural Resources Co. explores and develops domestic natural gas and oil.
