Wales is the pride and joy of the members of the Indian community living and working here, according to honorary consul Raj Aggarwal.

The pharmacist addressed guests at a Diwali celebration at Cardiff’s Swalec Stadium last night attended by First Minister Carwyn Jones ahead of a trade mission to Delhi and Mumbai next week.

Mr Aggarwal said: “I value the strong relationship the Welsh Government and its people have with the Indian community residing in Wales.

“Indians have a justified reputation of being law abiding, hardworking, tolerant and economic development of this beautiful country Wales.

“More importantly we share the same affection for food, drink and music. Indians are truly grateful and happy to be part of Wales. Wales is our pride and joy.

“A significant proportion of health care professionals in Wales are from India and working along colleagues contribute immensely to public health, wellbeing, culture, economy prosperity and success of the nation.

“The presence of so many captains of industry, business leaders, heads of higher education schools, vice chancellors, students from world class institutions, senior representatives of community centres and temples and all of you is very pleasing.”

The First Minister said: “The Indian community has always played a significant part in the economic and social life of Wales and has a particularly strong influence in the health sector.

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution they continue to make to Wales.”

There are more than 2,500 Indian Students studying in Wales.

Mr Aggarwal said: “They are true ambassadors and contribute over £150m to the Welsh economy.

“Two thirds of India’s population is under the age of 35.... India has as target to up skill 150 million people by 2022.... This is an opportunity and challenge for Welsh Institutions.

“We need to broaden our relationships but I am concerned about the unintended consequences of regulations, such as visa limitations on amount of time bonafide students have to find a job.

“I do believe sharing of corporate/industrial experience after graduation is mutually beneficial. Let’s hope this barrier is removed soon.

“There is a lot of positivity in India following the recent landslide victory led by PM Modi in the recent elections.

“The BJP was elected on a mandate of economic outreach, growth, sustainability, equality, and job creation.

“The Equity markets reached record highs due to strong government, stable currency, reductions in inflation and real growth.

“India used to be known as a country of snake charmers but now we play and work with the mouse... IT expertise!  India is the first country where it’s Mars mission has been successful at the first attempt and at about a tenth of the cost of other countries.”
