KINGSTON >> The city is set for a May cleaning.

The sixth “Kingston Clean Sweep” will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on May 2.

Just as they have in the past, volunteers will pick up litter lying about the so-called Kingston Corridor from railroad crossing on Washington Avenue through the Uptown business district, down Broadway, and to the Rondout waterfront.

The clean-up will also include some city parks.

The “Kingston Clean Sweep” is sponsored by the Friends of Historic Kingston with support from the city and numerous other business, service and civic organizations, schools, churches and individual volunteers.

Each group or individual is assigned a section of the sweep corridor and is supplied with trash bags and plastic gloves donated by local businesses.

Filled bags are placed on the curb and picked up by the city’s Department of Public Works crews immediately following the event.

Some of the participating organizations for this year’s Kingston Clean Sweep include the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Business Alliance of Kingston, Children’s Home of Kingston, Family of Woodstock, Friends of Historic Kingston, Friends of Senate House, Gateway Community Industries, Hudson River Maritime Museum, Irish Cultural Center of the Hudson Valley, Junior League of Kingston, Kingston Catholic School, Kingston Cares, Kingston Land Trust, Kingston Library, Kingston Lions Club, Kingston Opera House, Kingston Rotary, Kingston Uptown Business Association, Kingston Waterfront Business Association, Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Midtown Rising, SUNY Ulster, Target, Tri-Lutheran Churches of Rondout, Ulster Garden Club, Viridian Energy, Ward Nine and Young Ulster Professionals.

Last year, approximately 400 volunteers from students to senior citizens picked up 2,840 pounds of litter, yard waste and metal materials.
