Reforming HCI just 'lipstick on a pig'

Chris Spry, candidate for Ward 1, says "there is just no fixing" HCI funds.

If the so-called slush funds do remain, Spry said, he will not use them.

"I believe one of the reasons the public has so little trust and respect for local politicians is because of things exactly like HCI funds," said Spry. "It's sad to say, but too many times politicians have been caught using these for questionable, if not inexcusable, causes. The reality is, if we want to start earning back trust, we need to start growing up and letting go of the purse strings.

"I don't care what anyone else ultimately does. I made a promise not to touch the money and I won't. If it is made available to me, I'll simply request it goes back into city coffers.

"Trying anything other than eliminating slush funds is simply unacceptable. You can put lipstick on a pig, but in the end, it is still a pig."
