Three Nigerian nationals were brutally beaten up by an angry mob at Delhi’s Rajiv Chowk metro station, video footage from a mobile phone posted on YouTube doing the rounds of the social media. It was unclear when the incident took place.

The Hindustan Times quoted a CISF spokesperson as saying “The Nigerians and the group of students were trying to board a yellow line train at Rajiv Chowk going towards South Delhi. Due to some rush, there was some pushing around and the Nigerians allegedly made racist remarks. This apparently angered a group of people who pushed the Nigerians out of the train and started beating them.”

The video shows the three foreign nationals cornered by a huge crowd of people inside a Delhi Police enclosure at the metro station. They were beaten up with what appeared to be sticks and wires.

As some people beat them up, the crowd surrounding the enclosure cheered on. One of the men climbed up on the barricade that formed the enclosure to save himself. He was, however, unsuccessful as another man from the mob climbed up the barricade and beat him down.

People were seen throwing things at them and even as the police and security personnel tried to disperse the crowd it did not work.

What came as a shock, though, was the police and Metro security officials who were soon seen walking away from the place, while a few just stood by and watched the whole ordeal.

Meanwhile the crowd continued to throw things at the men, while others stood there to take videos on their phones. Soon after, they were heard chanting “Bharat mata ki jai” and “Vande Mataram.”

The Nigerians have lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police. According to The Hindustan Times , “the injured Nigerian nationals are students and they are staying in India on student visas.”
