Police said the Trailblazer was driven by Rocio Martinez-Vega, 35.

As a result of the collision, the driver of the Escalade lost control and the car flipped onto its passenger side.

While overturning, the Escalade fell onto the back of a 1998 Ford F150 pickup truck, driven by Manuel Ramirez, 25, that was stopped at a red traffic signal. Two 1-year-old children were seated in child safety seats inside the F150 at the time.

Cars collided within earshot of South Omaha City Councilman Garry Gernandt Thursday. When Gernandt arrived, he found people needing quick medical attention.

"(I heard) bloodcurdling screams, 'Get me out of here, get me out of here. Help! Having a hard time breathing.' Those types of things," Gernandt said.

When he's not approving liquor licenses or changing city codes, Gernandt isn't afraid to help people in trouble.

"The ones in the Escalade were screaming for help," Gernandt said.

The retired Omaha Police sergeant wasn't the only one who reacted to the urgent plea.

"Probably four or five young men came over and we started to pull the roof that had collapsed on top of the occupants, try to get away to relieve some of that pressure," Gernandt said. "It was a little chaotic, but I have to admit people wanted to help and get those folks out of there. I am proud of South Omaha. They came to the rescue."
