The wall poster culture has become an evil. The authorities concerned should insist on printers and advertisers to pin and hang them in custom built boards. The posters can be collected intact later. The local bodies could also get some revenue.

A hindrance to fishermen
The huge deposit of sand near the auction yard at Jagadapapttinam has been causing hardship to fishermen.
In the absence of direct access, fishermen have to take a detour to reach the auction yard.
I request the authorities to dredge the area or to provide some landing bay so that fishermen could directly reach the yard from the sea.

Court boycott
F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla, a Supreme Court judge, has asked advocates not to resort to strikes or court boycotts. He has advised the Bar to set up a committee that works with the judges to resolve any problem ( The Hindu , November 9, 2014). Hence the court strikes, boycotts should be treated as contempt of public confidence in judiciary and dealt with seriously.

Biggest cannon
The winding masonry steps at the giant 26-foot forge welded big cannon, kept mounted at an elevated plane in the eastern rampart in Thanjavur sports a clean look because of the reclamation work being done by the Archaeological Survey of
India.
Though this is one of the biggest cannons in the world, it is found deserted.

Sleeping railway staff
Recently while travelling by Mannai Express from Chennai to Thanjavur in AC sleeper coach, a passenger wanted to alight at Kumbakonam at 3.50 a.m. The door could not be opened as the coach attendant was sleeping near the door way.
Earlier there was a system of waking up passengers who had to alight in the wee hours.
The attendant informed us that the system has been discontinued. At a time when passengers expect more facilities, it is a pity that even existing facilities are discontinued.

Expired goods
At Annai Anjugam Nagar, sale of goods well past their expiry date is common in many shops. The Health department should check and penalise erring shopkeepers. If necessary, their licences should be cancelled.

FM radio
Almost all cities have private FM stations, whereas Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, and Pattukottai don’t. The authorities concerned should permit setting up of private FMs in these towns.

Scanners
House break and burglary have become common in villages in Thanjavur district.
Forensic personnel coming to the spot to take fingerprints use the manual fingerprint instead of using live scanner machine.
Using scanner would save time and provide more clarity to investigation.

ATM service
The RBI has asked member banks to control withdrawal of cash by customers from ATMs to five times in a month.
Beyond the stipulated number the banks propose to charge Rs. 20 from customers. Instead the banks may collect service charge of Rs. 25 per annum from customers.
