U.S. stocks closed flat on Veterans Day, with both the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.01% and the S&P 500 up 0.07%, while the Nasdaq gained 0.19%. The stock market’s meager gains were led by the materials and energy sectors.

Despite the more muted index finishes, several stocks moved significantly higher. Tesla (TSLA), Priceline (PCLN) and Rackspace (RAX) were among some of the better performers on Wall Street.

Tesla Motors (TSLA)

Tesla stock finished up 3.78% to close at $251.07 on a big day for its CEO Elon Musk … who made a splash on nothing having to do with Tesla. Musk last night tweeted:

“SpaceX is still in the early stages of developing advanced micro-satellites operating in large formations. Announcement in 2 to 3 months.”

Musk was responding to a Wall Street Journal report that he is working with former Google (GOOG) executive Greg Wyler on a project to launch 700 communication satellites, weighing less than 250 pounds apiece.

Last week, TSLA reported stellar earnings and Musk said that 7785 vehicles were delivered, the highest number of quarterly orders yet for the fledgling auto manufacturer.

Priceline (PCLN)

Priceline was up 4.23% to $1,167.36 on a favorable mention from Zacks.com for its burgeoning business expansion into Asian markets. PCLN has recently taken a stake in Ctrip (CTRP), a Chinese online site.

PCLN pushed back above its 50-day moving average today on 1.3 million shares, and is now about 4% below the 200-day moving average at 1210.82.

Rackspace (RAX)

Rackspace gapped up today on huge volume of 12.1 million shares, finishing up 12.89% to close at $42.13. The cloud computing services company reported earnings of 18 cents per share, which beat the Street estimates by 3 cents. Revenue of $459.78 million also was slightly higher than the consensus numbers.

RAX is up some 35% over the last 6 weeks of trading, and pushed through significant recent resistance around $40.

As of this writing, Ethan Roberts did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.
