ICYMI: Kroger Murder Suspect in Custody

A man arrested on Thursday afternoon and charged with murder for the March 10 killing of a man in a Midtown parking lot appeared on Friday.

Damarius Thompson, 26, was in court at 11 a.m. to formally be charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Fulton County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Tracy Flanagain said.

Thompson is suspected of killing Josh Richey in the parking lot of the Kroger on Ponce de Leon Avenue after Richey discovered Thompson attempting to steal his work truck. A tip provided through Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta led police to Thompson, who was taken into custody without incident while eating lunch, police said.

Fulton County jail records show Thompson as a frequent guest inside that facility; prior to his Thursday arrest, he had spent time in the jail on various charges such as obstruction, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, battery, and burglary between 2008 and 2014.

DeKalb County jail records show arrests for Thompson between 2007 and 2012 for reckless driving, possession of tools for the commission of a crime, theft by receiving stolen property, and several failure to appear arrests.

Georgia Department of Corrections records show that Thompson has done two stints in state prison for aggravated stalking, terroristic threats and actions, and theft by receiving stolen property.

Police are still looking for a second suspect seen on security camera footage getting out of the alleged getaway vehicle with a man police now believe was Thompson.
