Grants from a Caterpillar Inc. civic foundation will send an additional 2,800 students to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield to learn about Illinois’ most famous citizen.

The Caterpillar Foundation announced this week it will support field trips for schools in Joliet, Decatur and Dixon, where Caterpillar Inc. employees live and work.

“Giving kids who usually would not have the opportunity to learn about Lincoln’s legacy a chance to have this experience is important to us. Seeing someone come from humble beginnings to change the world is powerful,” said Foundation President Michelle Sullivan.

More than 3.5 million people over the past decade have visited the museum dedicated to the nation’s 16th president.
