PMC-Sierra, a provider of Internet infrastructure semiconductor solutions, announced a new range of silicon products that enables OEMs to develop a range of high performance, highly integrated solutions for the growing mobile backhaul market segment.

The new Universal Front End 4 (UFE4) silicon products– the UFE412 and UFE448– in combination with PMC-Sierra’s (News - Alert) WinPath3 network processors, offer OEMs a highly integrated platform to deliver end-to-end mobile backhaul solutions, from cell-site backhaul through hub sites and aggregation equipment, company officials said.

“After joining forces with PMC-Sierra, we are pleased to introduce our latest solution to further accelerate the industry’s transition to IP-based networks,” said Robert O’Dell (News - Alert), vice president of marketing, wireless infrastructure and networking division of PMC-Sierra, in a statement.

With these application-specific standard products (ASSPs), PMC-Sierra allows its OEM customers to develop more efficient multi-service aggregation and transport equipment that enables a smooth transition of their 2G and 3G networks to Ethernet backhaul while future-proofing their infrastructure investment, O’Dell added.

UFE4 product family builds on the success of the WinPath and UFE platforms. PMC-Sierra’s UFE4 co-processor and WinPath3 support a variety of services: TDM, ATM, Frame Relay, HDLC, PPP and Circuit Emulation. Additionally the new UFE4 integrates a SONET/SDH Framer/Mapper, as well as an advanced Protocol Pre-Processing Core for PWE3 services for SONET/SDH networks, company officials said.

By offering support for all protocols on both channelized and non-channelized interfaces, the UFE4 enables a true Any-Service, Any-Port platform. Together with the WinPath3, this platform supports a variety of protocol interworking services including CES (News - Alert) over PSN, ATM over PSN, PPP/ML-PPP, HDLC, IP and Ethernet interworking and many others.

UFE4 and WinPath3 together provide the OEMs with a flexible platform that helps them develop feature-rich solutions while minimizing board space and power consumption, according to company officials.  The UFE412 is now sampling to select customers, and the UFE448 will be available in the second half of 2011, according to company officials.

Recently reported on TMCnet, PMC-Sierra announced the launch of its new Forward Error Correction (FEC) technology for high performance, cost-effective 40G and 100G Optical Transport Network (OTN) deployments.
