Mystery surrounds a massive explosion that was heard across Manchester and Salford.

Residents from Rusholme to Eccles reported hearing the ‘huge bang’ at around 10.30pm on Monday night.

Crews were called to reports of the sound of an explosion on Hessel Street, Salford - the site of a small industrial estate - at around the same time but firefighters found no evidence of a blaze, says the Manchester Evening News .

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue and Greater Manchester Police said there were no other reports of serious explosions.

Rory Nolan tweeted: “Just heard a rather large bang outside, bit peculiar. Anyone know what it was? #Rusholme #Manchester”

Cleo Kinsey-Lyons said: “What the hell was that massive bang I just heard? Sounded like it echoed all around Salford and Manchester..... Scary stuff.”

The loud noise was first reported at around 10pm and a large number of people went on social media to find out the cause of the mysterious sound

Greater Manchester Police confirmed they are investigating the reports.

Manchester Fire Service later said there was no sign of a fire in Salford following widespread social media reports that there had been a loud explosion in the area.
