Excitement grows for members of Burnham’s Hillview Carnival Club

-

Excitement is building for the young members of Burnham-On-Sea’s Hillview Carnival Club as this weekend’s start of the carnival season nears.

The children have unveiled their jungle-themed costumes, which will be worn on their cart, called Jungle Fever, during Saturday’s Bridgwater Carnival and then Monday’s Highbridge and Burnham Carnival.

The club – which is celebrating its 40th year – has this week thanked the Lighthouse Pub in Burnham which has become its HQ for the year ahead.

Hillview’s Treasurer, Lyn Burland, pictured with the pub’s Darren Hodge, said: “We are very grateful to Darren and the team at the pub for all their support.”

“The children are getting excited and everyone is really looking forward to performing in front of the crowds at Bridgwater on Saturday and in Burnham on Monday night.”

Darren added: “We are really pleased to be supporting our town carnival club, Hillview. We will be holding several fundraising events for them over the coming year and wish them success over the next couple of weeks.”

Decorated with more than 5,000 light bulbs, Hillview’s 80ft-long ‘Jungle Fever’ cart has cost the club more than £10,000 to build. The finishing touches are being put to it this week. It will be seen by thousands of people at carnivals across Somerset in the coming fortnight.

Lyn added: “We’re also hugely grateful for the support of Terry Rickards at Burnham Waste for allowing us to build our cart on his land in Highbridge this year – he has been wonderful.”
