LEOMINSTER — Several structures at the site of the former Bickford’s restaurant are being demolished to make way for the construction of a new Wendy’s restaurant on North Main Street.

“This will be great to help clean up that area,” said Mayor Dean Mazzarella on the new restaurant that will have a drive-thru.

The location for the new 3,200-square-foot restaurant, at 528 N. Main St., has been used as a gas station, for the now-closed Bickford’s and a terminal for Peter Pan Bus Lines.

Demolition crews are removing all the structures on the site and the underground storage tanks used by the gas station.

“I know people would have wanted a new office building on the site, but not many developers have the resources to deal with those underground storage tanks,” said Mazzarella, adding that having another Wendy’s in the city is positive news.

The city’s Planning Board spent several months earlier in the year working through the details of the plans for the site provided by a restaurant representative. The site plan was approved by the Planning Board in mid-May.

In the plan, it requires the restaurant to have deliveries made in the early morning or late night to avoid traffic conflicts in the parking lot of the adjacent Marshalls.

A landscape plan will also have to be submitted from the restaurant and all landscaping must be maintained and any plants that “fail to thrive” must be replaced, according to the requirements established by the Planning Board.

Several attempts to contact corporate officials and learn when construction might begin, its possible completion date and the number of employees the restaurant will employ were unsuccessful.
