SMART Metering Systems has struck a deal with Total Gas & Power to provide electricity meters and data management services to thousands of UK business customers.

The contract requires the electricity division of the Glasgow-based company to supply an initial 5000 meters to Total clients by April 2016.

It comes shortly after the division secured contracts with Opus Energy and Dong Energy.

SMS moved into the electricity metering market when it acquired Welsh firm Utility Partnership for £14 million in April last year.

TGP is a UK subsidiary of energy giant Total SA.

SMS chief executive Alan Foy said: "Following recent contract wins with Opus Energy and Dong, this new agreement with TGP is further demonstration of the success of our electricity division and the positive impact of expanding our service offering across the gas and electricity sectors to provide a fully-integrated service in these markets for our customers.

"This contract will provide an increase in the recurring revenue of our electricity division, continuing the substantial growth as announced in our trading update."

TGP's Karole Downton said working with SMS's electricity division was the "logical next step" after forging a relationship with the metering company's gas operation.

Ms Downton added: "This will enable us to offer the most advanced metering solutions to our gas and electricity customers, and ultimately help them to most effectively manage and reduce their energy costs."
