U.S. biofuels producer, Gevo Inc. (Gevo), has announced it will supply isobutanol to Gulf Racing Fuels, a specialist racing fuel provider, to be used in new fuel blends for marine use.

The new fuel blends will include 16.1 percent isobutanol, and is said to improve performance while meeting U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emissions standards for marine fuels.

"We selected Gevo's isobutanol over other alternatives because it is moisture resistant and has a lower vapor pressure than ethanol," said Jess Hewitt, President of Gulf Racing Fuels.

"We believe there is a large unmet market need that will sustain good profitability," continued Hewitt.

According to Gevo, the overall opportunity in the marine and off-road fuel market is estimated at 1.7 billion gallons annually.

"We look forward to growing this market together," said Patrick Gruber, Gevo's CEO.

In September, it was reported that the U.S. Department of Defence is investing $210 million in biofuel production for the U.S. military.
