Gionee Elife E8 release date, specs rumors: New renders reveal first Android smartphone to offer 'lossless zoom'

After leaked images of the Gionee Elife E8 had surfaced online, revealing its design aesthetics matching those of the recently announced Elife S7, but with a slightly edgy design, new official-looking renders show the upcoming smartphone sporting a premium look and a 23MP rear camera with lossless zoom.

The Chinese smartphone maker is reportedly working on its flagship Elife S8, which had been spotted in the GFX Benchmark last month, with an impressive list of hardware specifications. The leaked GFXBench results revealed that the Elife S8 featured a smaller 4.6-inch display with a resolution of 1440 by 2560 pixels (QHD), making it the smartphone with the crispest display in the world, beating even the two smartphones currently with the crispest displays - the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, both of which offer a PPI of 577.

According to the leaked GFXBench test results, the Elife S8 is powered by a 1.9GHz octa-core MediaTek 6795 chipset along with the PowerVR Rogue G6200 GPU for graphics, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of integrated storage space. The Elife S8 will ship with the new Amigo 3.0 UI, which is based on Android 5.0 Lollipop. The upcoming smartphone has an impressive 23 megapixel camera that is capable of taking pictures equivalent to 100 megapixels and an 8-megapixel front-facing shooter.

The new official-looking renders of the Gionee Elife E8 confirms the smartphone's premium look with a gold finish back and the alleged 23MP camera accompanied by dual-tone LED flash. The images also show a fingerprint sensor below and the audio port on the top in the center, while the microUSB port is located at the bottom. Additionally, the speaker mesh can be seen just above the bottom and the rear microphones are positioned on top. The 23MP camera housed inside the Gionee Elife E8 will offer lossless zoom, which has so far been available only in Nokia Pureview smartphones, such as the Pureview 808 and the Lumia 1020. Lossless zoom allows users to zoom in closer without significant deterioration in image quality, as compared to traditional digital zoom, which leads to blurry photos.

There is still no official word on the Elife E8, though Gionee's president, William Lu has promised that the smartphone would be launched in June.
