WSU Downs Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Washington State swim team opened 2015 with a convincing 187-75 victory over Oregon State Friday night at the Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis, Ore. The Cougars garnered the top time in 12 of the evening's 14 events to give WSU its third-straight victory over the Beavers.

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead, taking the top two spots in the 200 medley relay. WSU's team of Hannah Bruggman, Presley Wetterstrom, Haley Rose Love, and Anna Rosen took first place in the event with a time of 1:44.53.

Wetterstrom added first-place finishes in the 200 breast (2:18.84) and 200 IM (2:08.69), as well as a second-place finish in the 100 breast (1:05.68). The Colfax, Calif., junior contributed 22 points to the Cougars' total.

Sophomore Kendra Griffin added 16 points to the WSU total, taking home first-, second-, and third-place finishes. In the 200 fly, Griffin outtouched teammate Elise Locke to grab first place with a time of 2:04.17. Locke clocked a time of 2:04.76.

The Cougars swept three events in the dual. In the 100 fly, Anna Brolin, Mand, and Love took first (56.15), second (57.11), and third (58.01), respectively. In the 50 free, Bruggman (24.06), Nicole Proulx (24.14), and Rosen (24.72) grabbed the top spots. The Cougars also swept the 100 back. Mand led the way with a time of 56.58, followed by Love (56.99) and Shaya Schaedler (57.28).

Schaedler contributed 15 points to the Cougar total, taking the top spot in the 200 backstroke. The Gillette, Wyo., native clocked a time of 2:03.70. Fellow junior Frederikke Hall added a first-place finish in the 100 breast (1:05.32).

Freshman Rachel Thompson clocked the fastest time of the 200 free, touching the wall in 1:53.57. Locke followed with a second-place time of 1:54.50.

In the 100 free, Proulx and Bruggman took top spots, clocking times of 52.29 and 52.67, respectively.

The 400 free relay team of Proulx, Bruggman, Mand, and Love closed out the evening for the Cougars, clocking a time of 3:31.02 to earn first place.

With Friday's victory, the Cougars improve to 4-3 in dual meets this season.

The Cougars return to the water next weekend, traveling to Lincoln, Neb., for back-to-back duals with Nebraska. The Cougars will face the Cornhuskers Friday, Jan. 30 at 3 p.m. PT and Saturday, Jan. 31 at 8 a.m. PT.
