BILLERICA — American Science & Engineering Inc. announced this week that it received its first order for its SmartCheck Inspection Module High-throughput from an unnamed European Army. Financial terms were undisclosed. The system is designed to provide security officials with a safe, non-intrusive means to detect both organic and inorganic threats hidden on the person. The company’s Z Backscatter technology eliminates the need for a physical pat-down. AS&E makes a variety of sophisticated X-ray screening products. The company reported sales of $242 million in its most recently reported fiscal year, which ended in March 2010. Shares of AS&E closed yesterday at $92.81, down 35 cents, in Nasdaq trading.
