Del Mar Union School District board member Alan Kholos has resigned from the school board effective June 18 due to his relocation abroad for a one-year assignment with CareFusion, now part of global medical technology company Becton Dickinson.

Kholos has served on the board since November 2012.

According to a release from DMUSD, Kholos made valuable contributions during his time as a board member and was dedicated to high quality educational programs and making sound fiscal decisions.

Due to Kholos’ resignation, there is a vacant position on the board. The board has 60 days to make an appointment to the position or call for a special election. At its June 24 meeting, the DMUSD board voted to forgo the $280,000 to $300,000 cost of a special election and instead make an appointment. Applications will be available at the district office at 11232 El Camino Real or online at dmusd.org on Friday, June 26. Applicants have until July 27 by 4 p.m. to apply and will be interviewed at a special board meeting on Aug. 6 at 5:45 p.m.

Earlier this year the board voted to go through an appointment process rather than a special election to fill the vacancy left by board member Doug Perkins. The district had 11 candidates apply for the position and appointed Erica Halpern on March 4.
