Featured image for Phone Comparisons: LG G Flex 2 vs Yu Yuphoria

Introduction

Do we have a good one for you today – the popular LG G Flex 2 goes up against the new Yu Yuphoria.  We have a unique and popular niche device, the LG G Flex 2, going head-to-head with the newcomer from India, the Yu Yuphoria…a device that offers decent specs for an unbelievably low price of $110.  The G Flex 2 has the better specs, but how does the Yuphoria stand up to the G Flex 2, especially considering the price factor?  Both devices look great, both have a plastic back, and both are close to the same physical size.  The G Flex 2 is curved from top to bottom and forms a real nice feeling when holding it – the Yuphoria has a nice looking and comfortably curved metal band around the outside edge.

Despite the difference cost and design of these two devices, they do have a few things in common.  For starters, they both use the IPS LCD technology on their displays, although different resolutions.  They both use a 64-bit Qualcomm processor, but different models.  They both have a 2GB RAM and 16GB model (although the 3GB/32GB G Flex 2 model is the only one sold in the US) and both come with a microSD expansion slot to add more internal memory.  They both have the usual suspects – Wi-Fi, Bluetooth (4.1 on the G Flex 2 and 4.0 on Yuphoria), GPS, built-in FM radios (stereo on the G Flex 2,) a microUSB port for battery charging and data transfer, and both have Quick Charge capabilities (v2.0 in G Flex 2 and v1.0 in Yuphoria).

Please take a deliberate look at the detailed Specifications Comparison chart below and here you will see just how these two great devices stack up against one another – click on the “View Full Comparison” link at the end of the chart to expand the details.  After that, we will look at each individual device in greater detail and point out some of its pros and cons.  From all of this information we will try to determine the winner based on specs and execution of design and functions.

LG G Flex 2

AH LG G Flex 2-32Last year, when LG first introduced the original LG G Flex, some LG enthusiasts surprisingly embraced it.  I just never understood paying $300 for the G Flex simply because the phone and display were curved and had a ‘self-healing’ back.  It only had a 720p display resolution and 245 pixels-per-inch (PPI), when all other devices used a 1080p and even the LG G3 had 1440p, however, with the G Flex 2, LG upgraded it in all the right places.

The display and device are slightly smaller (5.5-inch vs 6-inch) and more manageable and easier to pocket.  LG upgraded the display to a more reasonable FHD P-OLED display, giving it a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels with a much more acceptable 403 pixels-per-inch (PPI)…and much better than the HD display and 294 PPI on the Yuphoria.  The G Flex 2 also uses the newest Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core 64-bit processor with four cores clocked at 2.0GHz and four cores clocked at 1.5GHz.  This goes up against the new 64-bit Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor clocked at only 1.2GHz.  The G Flex 2 comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory versus 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage in the Yuphoria – however, both have expansion capabilities via a microSD card.

The main camera in the G Flex 2 uses a 13MP sensor with Laser Autofocus, OIS+ and a Dual-Tone LED flash and a 2.1MP FFC for social selfies and video chatting.  The Yuphoria only has an 8MP main camera and a much larger 5MP FFC.  The G Flex 2 has a much larger 3000mAh, battery…of course the G Flex 2 battery is curved and non-removable while the Yuphoria has a 2230mAh removable battery.  The G Flex 2 also has NFC and a ‘self-healing’ back to help keep it free from scratches or dings.

The LG G Flex 2 is available on AT&T, Sprint and US Cellular, with prices varying greatly – AT&T is high at $300 for a two-year agreement and $700 off-contract.  The middle price goes to US Cellular of only $50 or $630, with Sprint falling in at $200 or $450.  It is running Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Yu Yuphoria

Yu Yuphoria cam AHMicromax is a very popular Indian manufacturer of smartphones, well known for quality at a cheap price – just the type of smartphone that sells well in India.  The brand is finally starting to gain notoriety outside the country – especially Yu Televentures, a wholly owned subsidiary of Micromax.  A slightly higher priced Yu Yureka was the first YU device to hit the market earlier this year.  The YU Yuphoria is their latest stab at a quality smartphone at a rock-bottom price.  Yes, the device is mostly made of plastic with metal trim that goes around the nicely rounded outside edges, but it still looks great and feels good in your hand.  It also has a rather awkward setup on the right-hand side of the device – the power button is sitting between the slightly raised volume up and down buttons…a rather strange configuration, but one you will eventually get used to the feel.

The Yuphoria sports a 5-inch IPS LCD HD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and 294 PPI – this goes up against the G Flex 2’s FHD 5.5-inch display with 403 PPI.  The Yuphoria uses a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core clocked at 1.2GHz and is a great middle priced processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB internal storage, complete with a microSD card slot for expansion up to an additional 32GB.  The G Flex 2 uses a more advanced 64-bit Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor – the one with the overheating rumors surrounding it – with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory, which also has a microSD card slot to add an additional 128GB of memory.

The main camera uses an 8MP sensor with autofocus and an LED flash, and it has a huge metal ring surrounding the lens mounted squarely in the upper center on the back.  This goes up against the 13MP camera in the G Flex 2 that adds a dual-tone flash, laser autofocus and OIS.  The Yuphoria does have a larger 5MP FFC for excellent social selfies and video chatting and the G Flex 2 is a meager, by today’s standards, 2.1MP sensor.  The Yuphoria has a small, removable 2230mAh battery compared to the much larger 3000mAh non-removable battery in the G Flex 2.  Both batteries will get you through a normal day and both devices have quick charge features.

The Yu Yuphoria is a dual-SIM device and one disappointing item is the Yuphoria lacks NFC capabilities.  It does include Pure Wolfson Sound and AAC speakers, although the speaker on the device is on the soft side, you can appreciate it better through a good pair of earbuds (not the ones that come with the device).  The Yuphoria is running Android 5.0.2 Lollipop with Cyanogen 12 riding on top.  The phone is available in two colors – Buffed Steel and Champagne Gold for approximately $110.

…And The Winner Is…

Summary

As tempting as it is to pick the Yuphoria as the winner of this comparison because of its tremendous bargain price, however, unless you are really strapped for money, there is really no reason to purchase the Yuphoria over the LG G Flex 2.  The G Flex 2 has a better display, better processor, more RAM, more internal memory, a better main camera (not the FFC), and larger battery.  The G Flex 2 has a stereo FM radio, NFC installed and an IR Blaster as well…for those reasons, I am picking the LG G Flex 2 as the winner of this comparison.

The Yu Yuphoria is a good second device or one for the kids in the family – it is a lot of smartphone for only $110, but is not for the serious tech user or person that demands better photos and higher performance…it is not a flagship device, nor is it advertised or priced as such.
