Blackhawks' Timonen to retire after season

Article content

Defenceman Kimmo Timonen confirmed Thursday that he intends to retire after the season.

The 39-year-old veteran was dealt from the Philadelphia Flyers to the Chicago Blackhawks at the trade deadline last month for two draft picks. After the season, he will become an unrestricted free agent.

Timonen had already hinted that this season would be his last after returning from blood clots. He wants to become a coach after leaving the ice.

But before Timonen hangs up his skates he's hoping for one last opportunity with the Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup for the first time in his long career. He played in his first game for the Blackhawks on Monday night in a 5-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Last season with the Flyers, Timonen finished with six goals and 29 assists in 77 games.

Timonen ranks third among active NHL defensemen in points with 571 in 1,092 career games with the Flyers and Nashville Predators spanning 16 seasons.
