MONTICELLO, N.Y. — Preparation work is moving fast for Sullivan County’s long-awaited casino, the developer of the project said.
Charlie Degliomini, vice president of Empire Resorts, said workers have cleared more than 100 acres off Exit 106 on Route 17 for the Montreign Resort Casino at Adelaar. The work is part of the $70 million infrastructure project to bring sewer, water, electricity, and roads to the $1.1 billion resort.
The rapid progress has been fueled, in part, by fear of a possible ban on cutting trees that could host the northern long-eared bat, which may soon be listed as endangered or threatened. The cutting ban could stretch from April through October.

In Massachusetts, construction will begin this week in Springfield for what is expected to be the first full-scale resort casino to open in the state. A groundbreaking is scheduled Tuesday for the $800 million casino to be operated by MGM Resorts International. The facility will occupy a 14.5-acre site in Springfield’s South End.
