A light aircraft that went missing after it was due to land at Dundee Airport has been found crashed following a major search on Tayside.

Police confirmed that communication was lost with the light aircraft when it was around four miles west of the airport.

Weather in the area was extremely poor at the time the plane went missing, with heavy rain and high speed winds in the area.

Coastguard teams and the RAF were involved in the search and the aircraft has now been located near the village of Abernyte, Perthshire.

The plane was believed to be carrying two people, and no information has been released on the condition of those on board.

Police Scotland said: "Police can confirm that following loss of contact with a light aircraft, believed to be carrying two people, due to land at Dundee airport at around midday today an aircraft has been located near to the village of Abernyte in Perthshire.

"Emergency services are currently in attendance at the scene."

The incident comes in the wake of a crash one month ago, involving David Rous and his wife Margaret Ann, of Newport-on-Tay.

The couple were flying from Dundee to spend a weekend with family when their PA28 Piper Cherokee light aircraft crashed into the Argyll hillside.
