TALLAHASSEE, FL. (AP) - The Florida Supreme Court is denying the appeal of a man on death row for a 2002 Jacksonville triple murder.

The court rejected Pinkney Carter's claim that he had an ineffective lawyer when convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend, her new boyfriend and her daughter.

Carter fled to Mexico after the crime, swimming across the Rio Grande after abandoning his truck at the Texas border. Mexican authorities immediately arrested him on weapons charges, but set him free three months later after he paid a $1,000 fine.

Two years later he was arrested in Kentucky on a public intoxication charge and a state trooper recognized him from a wanted poster.

Carter was sentenced to death for killing 35-year-old Liz Reed and 49-year-old Glenn Pafford and to life for 16-year-old Courtney Smith's murder.
