When the Rockland Boulders saw New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. throw out some serious heat at a celebrity softball game over the weekend, they became convinced the incredible athlete has the makings of a solid pitcher.

So the independent baseball club, which plays in the Can-Am League, offered the NFL star a rookie contract.

While they got only a brief look at the wideout's arm, they liked what they saw.

Boulders general manager Shawn Reilly explained why the team is offering Beckham a contract while throwing some shade at New York's professional teams:

It's apparent that Odell is a very gifted athlete regardless of his sport. We think that getting experience pitching to professional hitters will give him the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson. As we are the New York area's only defending professional championship team, he will have the opportunity to learn in a first-class environment while still in close proximity to MetLife Stadium.

One could understand why a general manager would want to sign one of the biggest stars in the most popular sport in the United States. It'd be a tremendous marketing opportunity for the club.

However, Rockland pitching coach Bobby Jones—a former MLB pitcher—thinks Beckham really does have some potential on the mound.

"We were very impressed with Odell's mechanics in the video," Jones said. "He's shown his ability to catch a ball on the gridiron and after seeing his prowess on the mound, I am optimistic that he has the tools to develop into a quality pitcher."

Not only does Beckham have a strong arm, but the 22-year-old also doesn't have as much wear on his arm as other pitchers his age.

Beckham, of course, wouldn't be the first football player to step onto a baseball field. As Reilly mentioned, Sanders and Jackson have both done it. Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson attended spring training with the Texas Rangers in 2014 and 2015.

If Beckham chose to sign the contract, he would report to the Boulders for spring training in May 2016.
