Trifurcation Bill may be tabled in ongoing session

More appeals in SC in the offing?

July 04, 2015 10:42 am | Updated 06:25 pm IST - BELAGAVI:

With the Supreme Court order on postponement of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike council elections giving a breather, the Congress government is all set to table the Bill on splitting the BBMP in the ongoing legislature session.

The Bill will be drafted based on the recommendations of the Select Committee headed by Minister for Information Technology S.R. Patil and a committee headed by the former Chief Secretary B.S. Patil.

After the passage of the Bill by the Legislature, the government will even file another appeal in the Supreme Court, seeking more time for delimitation and reservation of wards based on the new legislation, a Minister representing an Assembly constituency in the BBMP limits, told The Hindu .

The party plans to utilise “extra available time” for laying the foundation stone for new works and asphalting roads in the city.

“We will use the time for executing more development works and win the confidence of the city voters,” a Congress leader said.

He said the BJP, which was in power in the civic body for the last five years, had “swindled money” sanctioned for infrastructure projects and garbage disposal. “We want to do some surgery to the BBMP to tackle infrastructure bottlenecks and bring in good governance to ensure better city for the residents,” said a Congress leader and former Mayor of the city.
