Community Health Systems Inc. has confirmed that a subsidiary of the hospital chain is seeking additional space in Middle Tennessee for its support operations.

The confirmation came amid reports in real estate circles that the Franklin-based company was seeking 150,000 square feet of space at preferably a new construction building in Williamson County. Beyond that, observers said Community has broader long-term need for even more space.

CHS spokeswoman Tomi Galin cited the hospital chain's growth through acquisitions and plans to provide more shared services to its affiliates as reasons why its Professional Services Corp. subsidiary needs additional space.

"Our specific plan for this office space, including the number or type of potential jobs that may be created, is not being disclosed at this time," Galin said, citing jobs and economic benefits for Middle Tennessee from the company's growth.

In addition to its corporate headquarters at 4000 Meridian Blvd. in Franklin, Community Health occupies space at several other office buildings including the Carothers Building in Cool Springs and also in Brentwood. The company is the largest private sector employer in Williamson County, where most of its roughly 3,000 Nashville area employees work.

Earlier this year, Community Health acquired Florida-based rival hospital chain Health Management Associates, adding about 70 hospitals to its portfolio. At that time, Galin said the company anticipated that its overall centralized support services and corporate office expansion could create close to 100 jobs in Middle Tennessee.
