Axion batteries used in first all-electric locomotive

Axion Power International Inc. finished shipping its advanced lead-carbon batteries to Norfolk Southern Corp. for use in the railroad's first all-electric locomotive.

Based in New Castle, Axion said Friday it sent the last skids that comprise the battery order in late December. The batteries, using the brand name PbC, will power the NS-999 locomotive that is used to switch cars in a rail yard.

CEO Thomas Granville said the final shipment will add $475,000 to Axion's fourth-quarter revenue.

Axion and Norfolk Southern are working on an energy system for “over the road” hybrid locomotives, more powerful machines that will require more batteries.
