Dean Smith, Hall of Fame Basketball Coach, Dies at 83

Dean Smith, the Hall of Fame basketball coach who built the North Carolina Tar Heels into one of the pre-eminent college programs before retiring with a record number of victories, died Saturday night. He was 83.

The coach’s wife and five children were with him when he died at his home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the university said in a statement Sunday on behalf of Smith’s family.
