Drive rally against Charleston falls short
The Greenville Drive overcame a shaky offensive start to charge back into Saturday night’s game at Fluor Field, but the Charleston RiverDogs held on for a 5-4 win in front of 5,749 fans. The Drive had no answer for Charleston starter Jordan Montgomery (4-2), who hurled seven shutout innings and allowed only two hits with eight strikeouts and no walks, but they bounced back into the game against reliever Sean Carley. The big inning began with Yoan Moncada’s one-out triple to the right-center wall, but Moncada left the game after a hard slide into third base and was replaced by Javier Guerra.  After a walk to Michael Chavis, Carlos Mesa hit an RBI single to put the Drive on the board, and two batters later, Mauricio Dubon unleashed a long three-run homer off the offices beyond the Green Monster to cut the lead to one.Rafael Devers started off the ninth with a single through the left side and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but Charleston reliever Joe Harvey struck out the final two batters to end the game and record his eighth save.  The win was Charleston’s first in the 2015 Battle of the Palmetto State Rivalry Series. The RiverDogs never trailed in this one, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first against Reed Reilly (2-2) thanks to RBI hits from Dustin Fowler and Chris Breen and an RBI groundout by Connor Spencer. They added single runs in the third on Spencer’s sacrifice fly and in the sixth on Gosuke Katoh’s RBI single.Carlos Pinales kept the RiverDogs off the scoreboard over the final three and one-third innings, giving up just three hits and striking out two.Devers was the lone Drive player with two hits on the night.  Fowler, Katoh and Angel Aguilar collected two hits each for Charleston. The series wraps up on Sunday night at 7:05 PM at Fluor Field.  LH Dedgar Jimenez (3-1, 3.15) gets the start for the Drive, and the RiverDogs will send LH Justin Kamplain (1-5, 3.50) to the hill.
