The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Northern California and the monthly Spanish newspaper Sabias Que are planning the newspaper’s 10th annual fundraiser, with a dinner 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Chico Holiday Inn, 685 Manzanita Ave. Tickets are $30 for one, $50 for two.
This year’s theme is “ Latino Women on the Move” with speaker Maria Romo, author of “Con Fuerza de Mujer,” according to newspaper editor Maria Shahid of Chico. There will be a performance by Lupita Vasquez.
Tickets are available from Shahid at 966-4116. Sponsors are also being sought at that same number.
The event raises money for scholarships and other projects. Last year a student attending the Music University of Guadalajara, Mexico was given a scholarship, as well as medical equipment was delivered to two hospitals in Tijuana and Ensenada, according to Shahid.
This year’s event also will honor Chico attorney Sergio C. Garcia, who won recognition as an undocumented citizen to receive his California license to practice law.
Festival
The fifth annual Spring Bloom Festival is planned by Lucero Olive Oil 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the tasting room, 2120 Loleta Ave. in Corning. Tickets are $5, children 12 and under are free. Tickets: 877-330-2190. Grove tours are available for an addition $5 adults, $2 children. Tour reservations are requested at the same number.
Novice and experienced olive oil tasters can enjoy a number of varieties, along with balsamic vinegars, tapenades, table olives, mustards and specialty artisan foods. There is an additional cost for wine tasting, with 10 local participating wineries.
Lucero tasting room is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. The olive oil company was founded in 2005, The oil is grown, milled and bottled in Corning. There is a second tasting room in Napa.
Retail
Trent Walsh, who owns BaT Comics and Games in downtown Chico, is again observing Free Comic Book Day.
Like thousands of other comic book stores, BaT Comics will be giving away free comic books from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at 218 Broadway, while they last.
Walsh points out several recent movies such as Avengers, Kingsman and Guardians of the Galaxy, and TV hits Arrow and The Flash have roots in the world of comics. For the third year, Walsh is giving away a bonus free comic book to those who bring in a pet food donation for the Butte Humane Society. This is BaT Comic’s 22nd year in business.
Team building
Chico Business Group is bringing back speaker Craig Weber, a Fortune 500 trainer, consultant and best-selling author to talk about team building and leadership development.
He will be speaking 9 a.m. to noon April 30 at Canyon Oaks Country Club, 999 Yosemite Drive in Chico. The cost is $95 individual or $45 for nonprofit organization. Topics include overcoming the human tendencies that prevent effective meetings and team discussions; leadership skills needed to make conversations balanced, open and nondefensive; and providing useful feedback and dealing with conflict.
