GURGAON: An unopened branch of Bank of Baroda on Sultanpur Road in Farrukhnagar was gutted in a fire on Monday. The branch was scheduled to be inaugurated this week.
Around 7am, passers-by noticed smoke seeping out of closed shutters and they informed the police and fire authorities. Four fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames.
The firemen had to break a wall of the office and enter through the bank manager's cabin since the entrance was too small for them.
The fire was brought under control after several hours. Though the furniture, documents and computer systems installed in the branch were completely burnt, the blaze was controlled before it reached the vault. The cause of fire has not been ascertained yet.
According to bank sources, a few consumers had opened their accounts with the branch and it was handling business worth Rs 50 lakh before the branch was formally opened. The branch employees had been working for the past few days, preparing for the inauguration this week, though a date was not fixed.
"The fire may have been caused by a short-circuit. But since most of our operations are online, all our customer records have been saved", said Vinod Thakur, manager of the branch.
