A total of £3million has been released under the Rapid Response Facility and £2million will go to the British Red Cross.

Consular help is available for Britons and there is a number for anxious relatives to call.

International Development Secretary Justine Greening said: “As the death toll rises and the scale of this devastating earthquake becomes evident, the UK is continuing to do everything it can to help all those affected.”

Last night, volunteers spoke of their eagerness to begin rescue work.

A team from Search and Rescue Assistance in Disasters were set to fly from London.

The group assembled with specialist equipment at Heathrow airport.

Adam Turner, 21, of Spalding, Lincs, will be undergoing his first deployment with the charity in a two-week operation.

He said his family are anxious but added: “They are understanding that it’s something that I’m passionate about.”

Tanya Barron, of Plan International UK, is about three hours from Kathmandu.

She said yesterday: “Two lorries with vital aid including blankets are arriving today from our office at the Indian border.

“Plan’s aid will be a first outreach which at least allows people not to freeze.”
