A new “robo-warden” camera is to be introduced in Swansea as part of a crack-down on problem parking.

The parking enforcement vehicle will be used in places such as outside schools and around the Liberty Stadium.

Plans are underway to introduce the first mobile parking enforcement vehicle in the city which will have a camera mounted on the vehicle and will be able to monitor illegal parking in particular hot spots.

Across the UK, static and car-mounted cameras have been used to issue at least 10 million fines, totalling £300m in the past five years.

Swansea council is also planning to increase the hours of its parking enforcement patrols to tackle issues with parking in communities right across the city.

A spokesman for the authority said: “Swansea council receives regular complaints by residents that motorists are parking in residential bays without permits.

“The problem is now being addressed by extending operating hours of parking enforcement patrols in the city to allow them to carry out patrols later in the evening.”

Swansea Council has now increased the service so it operates seven days a week and from 7am until 10pm.

Mark Thomas, Swansea council’s cabinet member for environment and transportation, said: “Residents continually contact the council to complain that they can’t park in their street even when they have a parking permit.

“Often this is down to motorists parking in residents bays without permission.

“The extension of the operating hours will give the parking enforcement patrols the opportunity to get out into the communities and tackle these issues and help residents to park.”

The council has also confirmed the extended hours will enable the service to deal with problem parking near the Liberty Stadium during match days.

Mr Thomas added: “This is another area we need to tackle following regular complaints by residents in the Landore area.

“There is plenty of parking provided in and around the stadium for match day motorists to use without the need to park illegally, causing obstructions.

“We will be making sure that the ongoing problems near the stadium are also tackled.”
