Funded by DTE Energy Co., this project is in fact the second time when the Blue Oval and the Michigan-based company teamed up to make an environmentally friendly statement in the state. These previously mentioned will build the largest solar array in the state at Ford's World Headquarters.
Back in 2010, the two installed a 500 kW solar panel system at the Blue Oval's Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne. The solar energy captured by the photovoltaic cells is converted into electric juice that powers the assembly line on which the Focus and Focus Electric, C-MAX Hybrid and Energi are built.
However, the 4-year-old eco-friendly project pales in comparison with the new one. No less than 360 parking spaces and 30 EV charging stations will be powered from the soon to be built solar array. Ford and DTE Energy inform that the canopy will be able to generate some 1,038 megawatts of electricity, translating to enough zap to power 158 houses.
"The SolarCurrents canopy project is another example of how DTE Energy and Ford are working to build a more energy-efficient and sustainable future,” said Irene Dimitry, DTE Energy vice president of marketing and renewables. “At the same time, this project will help us come closer to meeting Michigan’s renewable energy goals and diversify our energy portfolio,” the official concluded.
Ford and DTE Energy have recently finalized an agreement according to which the latter company will finish construction of the carport by early 2015. The green activists out there will be happy to know that the SolarCurrents project will offset an estimated 794 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
