Carnival begins tonight at Smyrna park and continues through July 4

The Smyrna-Clayton July 4th Association is once again sponsoring a carnival at George C. Wright Jr. Municipal Park in Smyrna, as pictured here in 2014. This year's carnival starts Tuesday, June 30 and continues through Saturday, July 4.

The Smyrna-Clayton July 4th Association is sponsoring a week of activities leading up to Delaware’s oldest Independence Day celebration this year.

The Stine Amusement Shows Carnival begins tonight, June 30, at George C. Wright Jr. Municipal Park (formerly Smyrna Municipal Park) on North Main Street.

The carnival continues this week, with hours on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. Unlimited ride bracelets will be on sale through Friday, and discount coupons for the bracelets will be available at many Smyrna and Clayton merchants.

On Saturday, July 4, the carnival will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., in conjunction with the other events, entertainment, and refreshments at the park.

Parade and fireworks July 4

The Fourth of July Parade through downtown Smyrna will begin at 9:30 a.m. The lineup will start at St. Polycarp Church on South Street at Ransom Lane.

Preregistration for the parade ends today, June 30. Participants who haven’t preregistered may show up the morning of the parade but they will go to the back of the line. For more information, email Skip Carrow at skip4515@yahoo. com or call (302) 632-2405.

The parade route will include West Commerce Street and North Main Street, ending at George Wright Jr. Municipal Park, where the carnival, entertainment, and refreshments will be held.

In case of rain on the morning of July 4, the parade will be canceled, but the Citizens' Hose Company Band will give a free concert at the Clayton Fire Hall at 10 a.m.

Weather permitting, a spectacular fireworks display will be held at dusk at the James T. Vaughn Little League Field on Duck Creek Parkway, across from Smyrna High School.

The annual baby contest was already held – on Sunday, June 28 at the Clayton Fire Hall.
