Poughkeepsie High School’s crew team qualified four of its five boats for Saturday’s finals at the Scholastic Rowing Association National Championships Friday on the Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey.
Poughkeepsie’s girls varsity double of Makenzie Lewis and Ariel DelCastillo placed fourth. The Pioneers’ girls junior quad of Devin Tully, Fiona Mauer, Rita Reza and Sam Donahue placed third. The girls lightweight quad of Eden Ciferri, Anna O’Shea, Rose Spuhler and Allysia Yanez were second. The boys lightweight quad of Chris Cassidy, Brian Panzer, Seth Carty and Stefan Mckain were third. Poughkeepsie’s boys junior quad was fourth and did not qualify for the final.
Poughkeepsie coach Mike Smith said windy conditions put some of the rowers in “survival” mode, but nonetheless is pleased to have four boats competing Saturday.
“How can you have a bad day when you have four out of five boats advance at Nationals?” Smith said. “I’m very pleased with our performance and we’re looking forward to (Saturday) and giving it a go.”
Arlington’s senior girls eight placed fifth out of five boats and did not qualify for the finals. Rhinebeck’s lightweight girls eight placed sixth out of six boats and did not qualify.
Baseball
Mason Hooper pitched a two-hitter with no walks and five strikeouts to lead New Paltz over Arlington B, 6-0, in non-league baseball.
Nic Messina went 1 for 2 with a double and three RBI, Tyler Black was 1 for 1 with a walk and two RBI and Seb Pannuto went 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI for New Paltz.
Black’s RBI single scored Joe DiMarco to give the Huguenots a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Messina added a three-run double in the third inning. Jimmy Egan went 1 for 3 with a double for Arlington B (8-9).
Ardsley 6, Pawling 1 — Ardsley’s Brendan McNerney pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts to lead No. 6 Ardsley over 11th-seeded Pawling in the first round of the Section 1 Class B tournament. McNerney’s solo homer gave Ardsley a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Pawling concludes its season at 12-8.
Women’s track and field
Vassar College’s Heather Ingraham will compete for an NCAA national track championship on Saturday at St. Lawrence University in Canton. The senior excelled on Friday in the preliminaries of the Division III women’s tournament, posting the best time in the 400-meter dash.
Ingraham clocked in at 54.89 seconds in the third heat, ahead of second-place Sadie Yanckello of Rhodes College, who finished in 56.42. Bria Halama of Wisconsin-La Crosse had the second-best time on the day with a 55.76 in the first heat.
Ingraham took fourth in nationals last year but is the favorite to win the title this weekend after a dominant spring. Last week in the ECAC Championship, she ran the 400 in 54.15, which was the best time in the nation among Division III women.
